A check-up and clean while you are on holiday in Antalya
Some UK visitors book a routine check-up or a hygiene clean while in Antalya, especially if they struggle to get an NHS appointment at home. Here is how to make it useful, and safe.
A routine check-up and scale and polish can usually be done in a single visit at an authorised Antalya clinic. Ask for the price in advance, ask for any X-rays to be given to you, and treat any recommendation for crowns, veneers or implants as a second opinion to take home rather than something to decide on the spot. Keep your UK dentist informed so your records stay complete.
Not everyone who visits a dentist in Antalya is there for implants or a smile makeover. Some UK visitors simply want a check-up or a clean while they are on holiday. Perhaps they have not been able to get an NHS appointment, or they have a bit of sensitivity they want looked at, or they like the idea of combining a routine visit with a week in the sun.
That can be a perfectly sensible thing to do. It is also a situation where it is easy to be offered far more treatment than you came for. This article explains what a routine visit usually involves and how to keep it routine.
What a check-up usually involves
A dental check-up is an examination of your teeth, gums and mouth. The dentist will ask about your health and any problems you have noticed, look at each tooth, check your gums for signs of gum disease, and look at the soft tissues of your mouth. They may suggest X-rays if they need to see between the teeth or below the gum line. They should then tell you what they found and whether anything needs attention.
A scale and polish, sometimes called a hygiene visit or professional clean, removes the hard deposits (tartar) that brushing cannot shift, especially at the gum line. The NHS explains that tartar build-up is linked to gum disease, which is a common cause of tooth loss in adults. A clean is usually done by a dentist or a hygienist and takes 30 to 60 minutes.
How often you need one
The NHS says the interval between check-ups depends on how healthy your mouth is, and can range from three months to two years. People with healthy teeth and gums may need to be seen less often; people with gum disease or a lot of dental work more often. A one-off check on holiday does not change that rhythm, but it can be a useful extra if you have struggled to get seen at home.
Booking a routine visit in Antalya
- Choose an authorised clinicCheck it on our Antalya register list. Many in our ranking also publish prices.
- Ask the price in advanceFor the check-up, any X-rays, and the clean. Ask whether the clean is charged per visit or per area of the mouth.
- Book early in your stayIf something needs a follow-up visit, you have time.
- Bring what you haveA list of your medicines, any recent X-rays, and notes from your UK dentist if you have them.
- Ask for copiesAny X-rays taken and a short written summary of the findings.
Keeping it routine
Here is the honest part. Dental clinics in Antalya that serve international patients earn their living mostly from larger treatments: crowns, veneers and implants. A routine visit can sometimes turn into a conversation about a smile makeover. That is not always wrong. Sometimes a dentist spots something important. But a holiday is not a good time to decide on irreversible treatment.
- Ask what is urgent and what is not. A cavity that needs filling is different from teeth that could look whiter or straighter.
- Ask for the findings in writing. With the tooth numbers and X-rays, so you can show them to another dentist.
- Do not agree to crowns or veneers on the day. They involve removing healthy tooth and cannot be undone. Take time and get a second opinion.
- Be wary of “today only” prices. A genuine plan will still be available after you have thought about it.
Small treatments that can be done in one visit
Some things can reasonably be done during a routine visit if the dentist finds them and you agree: a small filling, a temporary fix for a chipped tooth, or a treatment for sensitivity. Ask the price before they start, and ask what material is being used. For anything larger, such as a root canal or a crown, consider whether you will be in Antalya long enough for the work to be finished and checked.
What about whitening?
Many visitors combine a clean with whitening. In-surgery whitening can be done in one visit, but it is not suitable for everyone, can cause temporary sensitivity, and does not change the colour of existing crowns or fillings. If you are planning crowns or veneers in the future, whiten first, because the new teeth will be matched to the shade you have at the time.
Keeping your UK dentist informed
Your UK dentist keeps a record of your mouth over time. If you have a check-up or treatment abroad, tell them at your next visit and give them copies of any X-rays and notes. That way, a change they spot later can be compared with what was found in Antalya, and nothing is done twice.
If you do not have a UK dentist at the moment, NHS 111 or the NHS website can help you find one taking patients. A holiday visit is a useful extra, but a dentist at home is still the foundation.
If you have gum problems
Bleeding gums, bad breath or teeth that feel loose can all be signs of gum disease. The NHS explains that gum disease is very common and that, if it is not treated, it can lead to the loss of teeth. A single clean on holiday can help, but gum disease usually needs a course of treatment and regular hygiene visits over months, which is difficult to arrange from abroad. If a dentist in Antalya tells you that you have gum disease, ask for the details in writing, including any gum measurements, and make an appointment with your UK dentist or a hygienist when you get home.
Gum health matters especially if you are thinking about implants in the future. Implants placed in a mouth with untreated gum disease are at greater risk of problems.
Questions to ask at the end of the visit
- Is there anything that needs treatment soon, and why?
- Is there anything that can safely wait until I see my own dentist?
- Can I have copies of any X-rays and a short written summary?
- Is there anything I should change in how I clean my teeth?
If the dentist cannot answer the second question clearly, that is worth noting. Most findings at a routine check can wait a few weeks for your own dentist; very few need treatment that same week.
Costs and payment
GOV.UK notes that the Global Health Insurance Card is not valid in Turkey, so you will pay privately. Most clinics that serve UK patients accept cards; ask in advance. Travel insurance normally covers emergencies, not routine dental care. Our article on money in Antalya has practical tips on paying.
If you came for something bigger
If you are in Antalya for planned treatment, the clinic will usually examine you, take X-rays and a 3D scan, and clean your teeth before starting. That is part of the plan rather than a separate check-up. Our questions to ask page covers what to agree before work begins.
Precious Dental, which publishes this guide, is our top pick for planned treatment. For a simple check-up on holiday, any authorised clinic near your hotel that gives you a clear price is a reasonable choice.
Common questions
Is a check-up in Antalya a replacement for my UK dentist?
Not really. A one-off check is useful, but you need a dentist at home who follows your mouth over time and can see you quickly if something goes wrong.
What should a check-up include?
An examination of your teeth, gums and mouth, a discussion of anything you have noticed, and X-rays only if they are needed. A scale and polish is usually booked separately with a hygienist or dentist.
What if the dentist recommends a lot of treatment?
Ask for the findings and X-rays in writing, and take them home for a second opinion before agreeing to any major work.
Can I use my GHIC in Turkey?
No. GOV.UK says the Global Health Insurance Card is not valid in Turkey, so you pay as a private patient.
