Phones and data during your dental trip
During a treatment trip, your phone is how the clinic reaches you: pick-up times, moved appointments, aftercare questions. Here is how to make sure it works, without a shock bill.
Before you travel, check what your UK network charges in Turkey: Turkey is outside the EU, and many UK plans that include Europe do not include it, so roaming can be expensive. Options include a roaming add-on from your network, a travel eSIM data plan, or hotel Wi-Fi. Make sure WhatsApp works, save your clinic’s number and address, and keep your phone charged on treatment days.
On a normal holiday, losing phone signal for a day is an inconvenience. On a dental trip it can mean missing a pick-up, not hearing that a fitting has been moved, or being unable to ask the clinic about bleeding at ten o’clock at night. Most clinics in Antalya coordinate everything on WhatsApp. So it is worth spending ten minutes before you travel making sure your phone will work and will not cost a fortune.
Roaming: check before you go
Since the UK left the EU, UK networks set their own roaming charges, and many now charge a daily fee for using your allowance in Europe. GOV.UK’s guidance on mobile roaming explains that networks must tell you about charges and set a default spending limit, but the details depend on your provider.
For a trip to Antalya there is an extra catch: Turkey is not in the EU, and many UK plans that include “roam in Europe” do not include Turkey, or put it in a more expensive zone. Using data at the standard rate can be very costly.
- Check your network’s page for Turkey, or call them, before you travel.
- Ask about a Turkey roaming add-on or a daily pass, if your network offers one.
- Turn off data roaming until you have decided, so your phone does not use data on landing.
Travel eSIMs
A popular alternative is a travel eSIM: a digital SIM you buy online and download to your phone, giving you a data allowance in Turkey for a set number of days. You keep your normal SIM for calls and texts, if you want, while using the eSIM for data. They can be good value for a week or two.
Check first that your phone supports eSIM; most recent smartphones do, but not all. Install it before you leave home, while you have Wi-Fi, and follow the provider’s instructions for switching it on when you arrive. Buy from a well-known provider and read the reviews.
A local SIM
You can also buy a Turkish SIM card from a mobile shop in Antalya. You will need your passport to register it. This can be worthwhile for a longer stay, but for a one-week treatment trip, an eSIM or a roaming add-on is usually simpler. Turkey also has rules on registering phones brought from abroad that are used with Turkish SIM cards for longer periods; ask the shop if you plan to stay for months rather than weeks.
Wi-Fi
Most hotels, cafés and many clinics in Antalya offer free Wi-Fi. WhatsApp messages and calls work over Wi-Fi, so even with no data plan you can stay in touch from your room. Public Wi-Fi is less secure, so avoid banking on it, or use your bank’s app over mobile data instead.
Before you travel: a phone checklist
- Check roamingYour network’s charges in Turkey, and buy an add-on or eSIM if needed.
- Save key numbersYour clinic’s WhatsApp and landline, your coordinator, your hotel, your insurer’s emergency line, and 112.
- Save addressesClinic and hotel, in Turkish, as text and as map pins.
- Download offlineA map of Antalya and a Turkish language pack for your translation app.
- Save documentsYour treatment plan, insurance policy and passport photo, available offline.
- Pack a charger and adaptorTurkey uses the European two-pin plug. A small power bank is useful on long days.
WhatsApp and your clinic
Most coordinators will message you the day before each appointment with a pick-up time. Keep notifications on. If you have a question after hours, send it on WhatsApp and say clearly whether it is urgent. For anything serious, such as heavy bleeding, severe swelling or difficulty breathing, do not wait for a message reply: call the clinic, and if you cannot reach anyone, call 112.
It also helps to keep the important things in writing. If the clinic changes your plan, the price or your appointment on WhatsApp, take a screenshot. Messages can be a useful record if there is any disagreement later.
Video calls
Some clinics offer a video call with the dentist before you book, or after you return home, to check how you are healing. A video call over hotel Wi-Fi usually works well; over mobile data it can use a lot of your allowance. If you have a call planned, find a quiet, well-lit spot with a good connection, and have your questions written down.
Security
Your phone will hold your passport photo, your treatment plan, your bank apps and your messages with the clinic. Lock it with a PIN or fingerprint, turn on the “find my phone” feature, and make sure it backs up automatically. If it is lost or stolen, you will want to be able to block it and recover your messages quickly. Write down a few key numbers on paper as a backup: the clinic, your hotel, your insurer and someone at home.
If you lose your phone
Tell the clinic as soon as you can, by email, from a hotel phone, or by asking hotel reception to call. Most coordinators will happily switch to calling your hotel room for pick-ups until you are sorted. Report the loss to the police if you need a reference for insurance.
Photos for the clinic
After treatment, clinics sometimes ask you to send photos of your mouth so they can check how you are healing, especially once you are back in the UK. Good light, a clear view and a short description of what you are worried about make the photos far more useful. Send them on the same WhatsApp thread so the history stays together.
Keeping your phone charged on treatment days
On the day of surgery you may be at the clinic for several hours, then sleepy afterwards. Charge your phone fully the night before, take a power bank, and leave it with your companion if you have one. Make sure someone at home knows your plans for the day.
Before your flight home, check that you have saved any photos, documents and messages from the clinic somewhere other than your phone, such as cloud storage or email to yourself.
And remember the time difference: Turkey is two or three hours ahead of the UK, depending on the time of year. If you message the clinic from home late in the evening, it may already be the middle of the night in Antalya.
Set your phone to update its clock automatically, so appointment reminders show the local time.
Sharing your location
If you are travelling alone, or your companion is out while you rest, sharing your live location with someone you trust for the duration of the trip is a simple safety step. Most phones and messaging apps can do this. Switch it off when you get home.
A small investment of time before the trip means one less thing to think about on the days that matter.
Back home
When you return, remember to switch off any eSIM or add-on you no longer need, and keep the clinic’s WhatsApp thread. It will be your main line to them for aftercare questions and, if it ever comes to it, for using your guarantee. Common questions
Will my UK phone work in Turkey?
Usually, yes, if roaming is switched on. The cost depends on your network and plan; check before you go, because Turkey is often not part of European roaming allowances.
What is a travel eSIM?
A digital SIM you download to a compatible phone that gives you a data allowance abroad, usually bought online before you travel. Check your phone supports eSIM.
Can I use WhatsApp on hotel Wi-Fi?
Yes. Most hotels have free Wi-Fi, and WhatsApp messages and calls work over it. You will still want data when you are out and about.
How do I call 112 if I have no credit?
In most countries, emergency calls can be made from any mobile phone. Do not rely on it: keep your phone charged and know where the nearest help is.
